Job Description

ROLE
Surerus Murphy Joint Venture are seeking to recruit an experienced Senior Project Manager to oversee the delivery of small and large diameter oil & gas pipeline construction projects across Alberta and British Columbia.

The Senior Project Manager position is a key role within the Surerus Murphy Joint Venture organization to ensure our projects are delivered to the highest standards. The Senior Project Manager is responsible for managing client relations, pre-award planning, and developing project strategies to suit the client’s and corporate needs of the Company for a project or multiple projects. This includes the oversight and coordination of procurement, prime contracts, subcontractor management program and project controls functions including profitability, schedule, cost, change management and risk management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supported by the Project Director / VP of Operations, the Senior Project Manager will transition a contract award into a set of project deliverables including creating work plans, evolving the proposal bid estimate to a project budget, developing the project baseline schedule from the proposal schedule.
  • Contribute to project estimates and project closeout reviews.
  • Develop, implement, and manage project specific plans to support all facets of project management and control the Project Execution Plan (PEP) in collaboration with the Operations Manager, Construction Manager, and Superintendent(s).
  • Manage the project in accordance with the Project Execution Plan.
  • Lead the project teams in the development and refinement of project construction methodologies and procedures throughout the life of the project.
  • Manage and administrate all project reporting requirements, both internally and externally.
  • Distributes workload to capitalize on individual and group strengths while ensuring balanced exposure to work experience and development opportunities.
  • Utilize all corporate project systems and processes to meet the project deliverables.
  • Manage and maximize the use of project resources to effectively deliver projects on time and on budget.
  • Manage the implementation of the project change management process.
  • Manage the project risk, and project control processes.
  • Manage and coordinate subcontractor relations and administrative processes.
  • Take responsible and accountability for the project’s financial results.
  • Support operations and functional management in the achievement of corporate initiatives.
  • Establish and promote best practice in health, safety, quality and environmental matters in conjunction with the functional departments.
  • Overall management of project teams during the construction and installation phase of the project.
  • Co-ordination of constructability input during solutions identification and development phase.
  • Co-ordination and allocation of construction staff to projects ensuring that appropriate construction
  • Overall management of construction resources including Labour, Equipment and Materials.
  • Overall performance management of subcontractors.
  • Ensures that the construction and installation teams are accountable for their performance against agreed schedules and man-hour budgets.
  • Ensures that all construction and installation activities are carried out in accordance with Health and Safety Legislation.
  • Ensures that all temporary and permanent construction and installation activities are carried out in accordance with agreed quality procedures.
  • Interfaces with all other functional leaders within the organization to facilitate successful development of the project from solution stage constructability through construction, installation, commissioning and handover to the client.
  • Support operations and functional management in the achievement of corporate initiatives.
Note: In addition to these duties personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required in order to support the objectives of the company.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Experience
  • 10 – 15 years of experience managing large construction projects.
  • 8 – 10 years of experience in pipeline construction management.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ working experience in a managerial role.
  • A professional designation such as P. Eng., P. Tech or PMP is an asset.
Qualifications
  • Engineering degree (Mechanical, Civil, Geotechnical etc), or graduate of an applicable technical diploma program, and/or,
  • Combination of education and relevant experience.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Effective communication skills, confident interacting with key contacts in verbal, written and electronic form.
  • Understanding of the oil and gas industrial construction industry.
  • Ability to read and understand construction documents including contracts, drawings, specifications, subcontracts.
  • Proven understanding of estimating and project management theories, methodologies, and industry practices.
  • Thorough understanding of scheduling processes.
  • Ability to contribute to and interrogate cost reports.
  • Familiarity with relevant construction codes, standards, and practices.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is field based and often works within remote project locations. Travel and/or living in temporary accommodations is required. Able to work 6 days on, 1 day off shift with12 hour shifts for the duration of project.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Senior Project Manager reports to the Project Director or VP of Operations. The position supervises project indirect staff which could include project managers and project leads for safety, environment, quality, commercial, engineering, Indigenous relations, and administration.
