About the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI):

The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired has substantial knowledge and experience in educating students to master the core curriculum and expanded curriculum that teaches them how to navigate their physical, social, and personal worlds. Our expertise is accessed and used by local educators to improve the education of all of Indiana's children who are blind or have low vision. Because of its strong reputation, the school attracts highly qualified administrators and educators, and students from other states whose parents move to Indiana so that their children can attend.


Role Overview:

The Orientation and Mobility Outreach Instructor supports schools that request ISBVI services for blind and visually impaired students. You will provide direct and indirect services to students and teachers in an assigned school district. You will assist students in assessing, orienting, and navigating diverse environments safely and efficiently. You will help students to use various senses, environmental queues, and mobility aids to improve their skills, techniques, and confidence in their surroundings.  You may also work with residential and non-residential students who are served by the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

Salary Statement:

The School for the Blind and Visually Impaired utilizes a qualification matrix to determine salary. Education, licensure, certifications, years of experience, and duties are considered. Minimum pay is $59,800 annually.

 

A Day in the Life:

 

The essential functions of this role are:

  • Provide direct orientation and mobility instruction and assessments to students.
  • Develop and implement goals and objectives for students' individualized education programs (IEPs).
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans according to students' IEP goals and objectives.
  • Document student progress and provide progress reports and report cards as required by the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI).
  • Participate in student IEP team meetings and parent/teacher conferences.
  • Provide strategies and adaptations to teachers to promote successful outcomes for students who are blind or have low vision.
  • Provide training for teachers, service providers, administrators, and parents regarding orientation and mobility.
  • Communicate regularly with parents, residential staff, and other center-based staff regarding students' progress and needs to ensure comprehensive and consistent instructional procedures and programming.

Credentials:

  • Indiana teaching certificate.
  • Orientation and Mobility certification required .

 

Additional qualifications:

  • Ability to participate in professional development activities such as attending conferences, workshops, and regional/state/national offerings to stay current with the latest trends.
  • Thorough knowledge of state, federal, and agency rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to plan student development programs that will best meet their needs.
  • Effective communication skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
